Astro’s Playroom Review

Astro’s Playroom is a free platforming game, included as a pack-in with the PS5. It’s inspired by the characters and concepts first introduced in The Playroom and The Playroom VR, which culminated in the full-blown Astro Bot Rescue Mission for PlayStation VR. The game serves as a showcase for the DualSense controller’s features and functionality. We awarded the game a 9/10 in our Astro’s Playroom PS5 review, describing it as a “love letter to PlayStation”. Astro Bot is a 2024 platform game developed by Team Asobi and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5 to coincide with PlayStation’s 30th anniversary.

First, progress through the level until you get to the controller cable tight-rope walk to the first Checkpoint, which you’ll do after crossing an island with strong winds. You don’t have to actually cross the tight-rope, but you do need to extend it since you can’t do that whilst carrying something. Below is a table that lists the locations of the starfish in Bot Beach in the correct order the images to enlarge them.

The other two are much weaker in comparison, considering the frog suit in Cooling Sprints is heavy to use with directional launching and motion controls. Meanwhile, the monkey suit in GPU Jungle is very frustrating to use outside of the cool swinging action due to the weird timing and its usage of the motion controls. For the next part of our Astro’s Playroom guide, we’re going to answer any remaining questions or queries you may have about the game.

Astro’s Playroom Gets Surprise Update Tied To Upcoming Sequel

Ghost of Tsushima was the last first-party PlayStation game developed exclusively for the PS4, after which the PS5 released. What this means is that if you, say, reach a Checkpoint with 10 Coins, then pick up 5 more Coins, then die, you’ll respawn at the Checkpoint back at 10 Coins, and need to collect the other 5 Coins again. What this means is that holding X to jump will make Astro jump higher compared to just tapping X, which will only give a short hop.

A revised version of the Processor Unit allowed for HDR passthrough, which was a feature added to all PS4s via firmware. The DualShock 4 marked the first time the PlayStation controller was given a significant aesthetic redesign. The new Share Button, which let you take screenshots and record video, replaced the Select Button, Fortunately, almost all games moved the Select Button function to pressing down on the new touchpad. Vita Game Packs could also be used on the PlayStation TV, which meant it wasn’t a digital-only platform like the PSP Go was.

If you miss and trigger the checkpoint on the lower platform you’ll need to restart the level to try again, if you don’t trigger it you can just jump off the side. To fly as far as possible you should hold the controller tilted back the whole way, then jump when you want to drop. Also at the second Checkpoint, head left along the cliff to find a Bot kneeling in front of a lad with a staff. The Bot with the staff is the Maiden in Black, a demon who uses souls collected by the player character to help them level up in the Nexus.

I went into this game expecting it to be nothing more than a quick tech demo, I was very wrong. What I was meet with was a platformer where you played as a charming little robot in a world that has a better art style then most modern games. Astro’s Playroom is the perfect game to play first to kick off the PlayStation 5 generation. It’s a fluid and fun 3D platformer sure, but it being built around showing off what the DualSense controller can add to gaming Is what really starts to make it special. Add in all of the PlayStation love letters scattered about inside these worlds and you have another magical, must-play experience from Team Asobi. I wish Astro’s latest adventure lasted longer but I have no doubt that we’ll be seeing more of the new PlayStation mascot in the future.

And yet, even when Astro is pulling off his most basic moves in familiar environments, this game feels revelatory. The PS5’s new controller combines a built-in speaker with vibrating haptics to make interacting with the world feel like it’s literally happening in your hand. Astro running across a sandy beach sounds and feels completely different than running on a fluffy cloud, for example. It is worth noting that the game is maintained in a very colorful artistic style, which may appeal to both older and younger players. Astro’s Playroom guide contains a detailed walkthrough for the game.

Yes, the game is a great showpiece for the PS5’s DualSense controller, applying its haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and motion-sensing technology to a variety of inventive situations. But Astro’s Playroom is much more than a tutorial; it’s a joyful and polished platformer that ushers in a new generation of PlayStation hardware with a big smile.
