Astro’s Playroom is a free game, pre-installed to every PlayStation 5 console. Whilst initially awestruck by the game, it didn’t take very long to see why Sony’s catchy ‘For the Players’ tagline is an admirable slogan built on a history of gaming icons. This game is incredibly well-made; the care put into it is visible in every corner; but as it is it was not made for people like me. Astro’s Playroom is as old as the PlayStation 5, and this is most likely the first game new owners booted up. Despite being a brief experience, this is the kind of game that can be played with family members and is worth playing in 2025.
Up until the 2017 game, Everybody’s Golf was called Hot Shots Golf in North America. The DualSense Wireless Controller is PlayStation’s most feature-filled controller. Removing only the light bar and renaming the Share Button to the Create Button, it features new haptic feedback motors in the handles for much more precise vibrations. The triggers were redesigned into “adaptive” triggers that provide force feedback during gameplay. Codenamed Project Morpheus, the PlayStation VR was Sony’s first virtual reality headset, featuring twin 120hz OLED displays with 100 degrees field of view, an integrated microphone, and motion sensors. It required the PlayStation Camera as it used the same tracking technology used for the PlayStation Move.

If I did not have the help of my sister, I don’t know what I would have done. The pivoting of the controller could be based in the analogue sticks, and the resistant triggers could be an in-game option to flick off whenever needed. Unfortunately, underneath all the bright and beautiful graphics with charming, engaging world design is a game that welcomes only the players who possess the ability to use all the DualSenses’ features. Astro’s Playroom is a delight and it is free – but physically disabled gamers are sadly not yet welcome in the world of PlayStation. Sony should come out For the Players, and update this game with the accessibility options it direly needs. While platforming games do not appeal to everyone, players can spend a few good hours going through obstacle courses and hunting a few easter eggs tucked away by the developers.

On the capsule itself, we included a small hint showing the image of a clock. Looking carefully around the level nearby, you will find a similar clock symbol carved into one of the trees up above. Provides accessibility game reviews, commentary, news, and accessibility reference guides. The Astro franchise is built upon the success of the PlayStation brand and became the de facto mascot. Sony Interactive Entertainment finally nailed the platforming genre, and it only took a cute little robot to give them the courage to innovate. Another unlockable display for the Labo area are some canisters with white logos in them.

These include defeating bosses like the massive robot in GPU Jungle and finishing main levels such as SSD Speedway and Memory Meadow. Each trophy marks significant progress‚ ensuring players experience the game’s vibrant worlds and creative gameplay mechanics. These trophies are straightforward‚ requiring players to follow the narrative path and complete specific challenges. Earning them provides a sense of accomplishment as you progress through the game’s charming and nostalgic levels. In Astro’s Playroom, scattered throughout the vibrant worlds, are Special Bots that pay homage to iconic PlayStation characters.
The PlayStation 3 used Blu-Ray discs as its optical storage method, a format that would be used for the PlayStation 4 and 5 as well. Because every PS3 came with an internal hard drive, many games supported partially installing data onto the console in advance (which some PS2 games also did, especially in Japan). Until the Wii U, the PS3 was the only system using optical storage with more capacity than a DVD, meaning many games that were on multiple discs elsewhere could be on one PS3 disc. The Network Adapter allowed the PlayStation 2 to connect online for multiplayer, sliding into the Expansion Bay.
Nearby the Horizon easter egg is an island with a bot making a blocky T. This references 2020’s Dreams on PS4, developed by Media Molecule. The game is about making assets and even entire games from scratch. At the start of GPU Jungle, check along the left-hand side between two trees for a lower section with four Bots with various weapons on their backs huddled around a campfire. This is a reference to 2002’s Monster Hunter on PS2, developed by Capcom.
As you’re exploring Playroom’s levels you’ll also stumble across Astro Bots wearing a blue cap and holding a camera. They’re mostly there for the fun of it all rather than to accumulate anything, but every single one of them made me smile, even the few that I had to take a moment to try and guess at. I won’t spoil any more here so as to not rob anyone of the joy of first discovering them.
If you want to own all the collectibles in the game, you’ll need up to 6,000 coins to win prizes in the PlayStation Lab’s prize draw machine. If you’re having trouble getting those new messages to pop up, you might try waiting until you’ve completed the relatively short game’s main campaign. We had trouble getting the message to appear on a new save file but saw it immediately upon entering a completed one. Simply interact with each one, help the bots lift up the rock, and they will be added to your collection.
The closest parallel to Astro’s Playroom that I can think of is Wii Sports. s8 are games that were explicitly designed to showcase a new controller. But both also transcend that goal, shifting from tech demo to straight-up fun game.
